Join us for the 2010 Magnuson Awards with Sen. Tom Harkin

I am pleased to announce that Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa will be joining us as the keynote speaker for the Washington State Democrats 17th Annual Warren G. Magnuson Dinner & Awards Ceremony (The Maggies).

The Maggies will be held on Saturday, October 2nd at the Washington State Convention Center. Registration and the Reception begin at 5:00pm and the Dinner and Program begin at 6:30pm. Each year we gather at the Maggies to honor the work and dedication of Democrats from around the state. We are accepting nominations in a variety of categories. To nominate somebody please go to http://www.wa-democrats.org/nomination. The deadline for nominations is Friday, September 10th.

Sen. Tom Harkin served in the House of Representatives for ten years and in 1984 was elected to the U.S. Senate. Tom has earned a reputation for giving a voice to those too often overlooked in Washington: working families, women, people with disabilities, children, students, seniors, family farmers, and small business owners. In Congress, Tom is a recognized leader in areas including education, health care and labor.

Tom's brother, Frank, was deaf since childhood, so Tom knows firsthand the challenges facing Americans with disabilities. He authored the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, the landmark legislation that protects the civil rights of more than 54 million Americans with physical and mental disabilities.

In September 2009, Tom succeeded Senator Ted Kennedy in becoming Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Tom believes that to serve in this capacity is to carry on the legacy of Senator Kennedy, who dedicated his life to ensuring that our economy works for all Americans, guaranteeing every child the opportunity to pursue a quality education and, of course, the cause of his life: access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans.
