Our Ads Highlighting Rob McKenna’s Discriminatory Stance Against Marriage Equality

On the same day that state lawmakers hold a hearing on a bill that would ensure all Washington couples enjoy equal rights, the Washington State Democrats launched web ads highlighting Rob McKenna’s opposition to marriage equality.

The ads, to appear on SeattleTimes.com, SeattlePI.com, PubliCola.com and TheStranger.com/slog, are designed to ensure that Washingtonians are aware that Rob McKenna does not support marriage equality.

“Now that marriage equality is dominating the public conversation, we intend to make sure that all Washingtonians take a hard look at Rob McKenna’s long record of discrimination,” said Reesa Kossoff, communications director for the Washington State Democrats. “All who support equality should know that McKenna has fought to preserve discrimination in state law, and even went so far as to equate marriage equality to polygamy and incest.”

As attorney general, McKenna vigorously defended the anti-equality “Defense of Marriage Act.” McKenna has also previously stated that legalizing same-sex marriage could potentially lead to incestuous and polygamist marriage. In Rob McKenna’s own words, marriage equality “threatens to destroy all standards we apply to the right of marriage.” [Seattle Times, 9/2/04; Seattle Times, 8/6/04]

In addition to the online ads, the Washington State Democrats will release an online petition asking that all Washingtonians who support equality say NO to Rob McKenna.
