U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ Retirement A Win for Washingtonians, the Environment

Seattle, WA – Washingtonians in the 5th Congressional District can breathe a sigh of relief with the announced retirement of U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). The Congresswoman’s lifetime scores of 5% from League of Conservation Voters, 12% from AFL-CIO, and a truly abysmal 3% from Planned Parenthood Votes for the current Congress demonstrate the need for someone who understands the values of Washington’s 5th Congressional District. U.S. Representative McMorris Rodgers’ retirement opens the door for Democratic candidates who believe in women’s reproductive freedom, stopping human-caused climate change, and protecting the rights of working people.

“At every turn, Cathy has turned her back on the needs of working people, reproductive rights, and refused to protect clean air, clean water, and a sustainable climate,” said Washington State Democratic Chair Shasti Conrad. “I look forward to working with the people of the 5th Congressional District to elect someone who shares their values of democratic principles and personal freedoms. Cathy was the lone Washington State Republican to vote against the impeachment of former President Trump for his incitement of insurrection and is a strong ally of current MAGA Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. Her brand of legislative chaos will not be missed in our state’s Congressional delegation.”

The Washington State Democratic Party is committed to advancing progressive policy, empowering the grassroots, and ensuring Democratic victories up and down the ballot. Chair of the Washington Democrats, Shasti Conrad, is the first Indian-American woman to chair a major state party.
