Organizing Academies

Last Saturday, we held a “Flip the 5th” Organizing Academy in Spokane. We knew the turnout was going to be impressive. But we were blown away when 439 volunteers attended and learned how to become leaders in the effort to oust Cathy McMorris Rodgers and elect Lisa Brown to Congress.

The day before the Spokane Organizing Academy, Paul Ryan’s super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund, announced it was opening an office in Spokane to help reelect Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Republicans are scared of what we’re doing in Eastern Washington and all across the state, and they’re now playing defense for the first time in a long time.

Just yesterday, The Cook Political Report moved Washington’s 5th Congressional District from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican.”

Frankly, after 439 fired up volunteers attended our Organizing Academy, we weren’t surprised to see that non-partisan, national entities no longer think Cathy McMorris Rodgers is safe. We’ve been saying it for some time. Democrats have the momentum in Eastern Washington, and we’ve only just begun.

We have nine more Organizing Academies scheduled for January and February across the state, with more to come! Click here to find one near you!

Next Weekend: “1 Year Later” Events

One year ago, millions of Americans became activists after the inauguration of Donald Trump. Next weekend, we’ll be holding a series of events and canvasses around the state to mark the anniversary of the beginning days of The Resistance. We’ll be holding events in Omak, Yakima, Auburn, Issaquah, and Wenatchee. Click here for details and to RSVP!

State of the State

The Washington State Legislature began its session this week. On Tuesday, Governor Jay Inslee delivered his State of the State Address to a joint session of the legislature. In his speech, Governor Inslee promoted progressive policies around voting rights, education, and climate change, calling on the state House and state Senate to come together and to put people first and work for the benefit of all Washingtonians. You can watch the full address here.

Calling Congress to Protect DREAMers

Nearly 15,000 DACA recipients have lost their protective status since Donald Trump ended the DACA program last year. Another 122 young DREAMers lose their protection each day. Congress needs to pass a clean DREAM Act now so that more DREAMers are not at risk of losing their DACA protections.

You can help by calling Congress and telling them to pass protections for DREAMers by January 19th. Click here to use the DNC call tool.

Southwest Washington Tour

Washington State Democrats Chair Tina Podlodowski is wrapping up a tour of Southwest Washington. During her trip, she has met with Democrats in Pacific County, Cowlitz County, and the 19th Legislative District. She also held a town hall in White Salmon with Klickitat County Democrats. Tina’s now in Vancouver, and she will be at our Vancouver Organizing Academy today!
