Trump Campaign Officials Charged in First Round of Indictments
On Monday, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his deputy Richard Gates were indicted for conspiring against the United States, among other charges, due to their undisclosed foreign agency and money laundering in connection with the regime of pro-Putin former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and others closely connected to Vladimir Putin.
Additionally, former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in January about his contacts with Russia during the campaign. According to a document filed by Mueller’s office with the court earlier in October, Papadopoulos “lied to special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation” about the “nature of his relationships and interactions with certain foreign nationals whom he understood to have close connections with senior Russian government officials.”
Donald Trump has tried to play it cool on Twitter, even as his former campaign staff and advisers are being indicted. “Few people knew the young, low level volunteer named George,” the president tweeted on Tuesday. Unfortunately for Trump, he also tweeted this image during his campaign last year (Papadopolous is third from the left, facing the camera):

With all due respect, Mr. President, we’ve worked on a lot of presidential campaigns and we’ve never heard of a “low level volunteer” being at the table to discuss national security policy with the future president and the future attorney general.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers and her GOP Tax Plan
This was the week that the Republicans in Congress had intended to devote to their tax plan, which was released on Thursday, one day later than initially planned. Washington State’s own Cathy McMorris Rodgers has spearheaded the promotion of the bill that would shift even more wealth to the ultra wealthy. She has been traveling around the country and peddling the plan to other people’s constituents, despite the fact that preliminary predictions show that 13 million Americans earning less than $100,000 per year could see their taxes increase under the GOP plan.
Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ plan changes nominal tax rates to make it look like the middle class will keep more money. But the small print of the plan eliminates deductions and incentives for the middle class, while widening loopholes (and even creating a new one) for the very wealthiest Americans. Cathy McMorris Rodgers and her Republican friends are hiding the ball and hoping we don’t notice.
During a week when Donald Trump’s inner circle is beginning to buckle under pressure from Mueller’s Russia investigation, during a week when there is so much at stake in the elections right here at home in Washington State, during a week when her constituents have very real concerns about her continued support for Donald Trump, Cathy McMorris Rodgers has run away (this time even farther than the west side of the state!) and tried to change the subject.
