Two days after a draft decision from the U.S. Supreme Court was leaked indicating the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade, Washington State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski issued the following statement Wednesday on Republican Tiffany Smiley’s silence on the issue:

“Tiffany Smiley is staying silent while people across Washington state watch the Supreme Court prepare to roll back reproductive rights. Here’s why: Smiley proudly says she is ‘100% pro-life,’ supports Roe v. Wade being overturned, and endorsed the most extreme abortion ban in the country.

“Abortion is under attack even here in Washington, because without Roe v. Wade, Congress could outlaw abortion nationwide. No matter how hard Smiley tries to hide it, the truth is Mitch McConnell and the extreme GOP are backing Smiley’s campaign because they know she would be another vote for their extreme, anti-abortion agenda.”

Reproductive health care providers in Washington have warned if Roe v. Wade is overturned, Washington state will see a 385% increase in patients seeking abortion care in the state.

Smiley has not only stayed silent on news that the Supreme Court is preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade, she has repeatedly said she is “100% pro-life” and in support of the a Texas-style abortion ban, even though “there’s a lot of parts of it that make it very hard for me in Washington state.”

Smiley’s earliest endorsers include Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), who is reportedly leading efforts to draft legislation that would ban abortion nationwide. Smiley also proudly accepted the endorsement of longtime anti-abortion Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), who made headlines for her outrageous anti-abortion, anti-contraception questioning during the confirmation hearings of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
