Smiley Silent on Idaho Abortion Ban, Touts Support from Viral Anti-Abortion Senator From Tennessee

Yesterday, the Republican Governor of Idaho signed a ban on abortions past six weeks modeled after the Texas abortion ban that Republican Tiffany Smiley has already endorsed. While Senator Patty Murray immediately condemned the anti-abortion law and its potential consequences for Washington state patients, Tiffany Smiley is nowhere to be found.

Notably, Smiley has proudly accepted the endorsement of longtime anti-abortion Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) who made headlines this week for her outrageous anti-abortion, anti-contraception questioning during the confirmation hearings of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“In Idaho, right next door, a ban on abortions past six weeks has been signed into law,” said Washington State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski. “Patty Murray is fighting against these anti-abortion attacks that hurt people in Washington state and everywhere else. Tiffany Smiley is cheering on these policies and is ready to ban abortion at the federal level.

“Washington state voters want someone who wants to expand access to reproductive health care, not restrict it or ban it altogether. Especially with hundreds of thousands of patients from Idaho now having to consider how they can get the care they need in Washington state, we can’t afford another anti-abortion voice in the U.S. Senate.

“Senator Murray is the only candidate for anyone who believes people should be able to make their own decisions about their own bodies and their own futures.”
