WA GOP Leaders Continue Defying Science & Public Opinion

SEATTLE — Despite continued public opinion polling showing that overwhelming majorities of Americans — including 78% of Republicans — are strongly supportive of public health measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, Republican elected officials across Washington State continue to embrace the extremist minority in their party clamoring for a dangerously premature reopening of the economy against the opinion of medical experts. Several members of the House Republican caucus even joined more than 2,000 protestors in Olympia on Sunday, while Minority Leader Wilcox refuses to criticize or hold members of his caucus responsible for endangering public safety.
“We can’t afford to gamble with Washingtonians’ lives, and every Republican elected official or candidate for office has a moral responsibility to reinforce the need to stay home and stay healthy,” said Washington State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski. “Across the spectrum from so-called ‘mainstream’ Republicans like JT Wilcox to extremists like Matt Shea, the WA GOP has completely failed to meet this moment and their failures are putting lives in danger.”
