WA Dems Slam Trump Administration Photo Ops
Ahead of Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette’s photo ops this week, Washington State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski released the following statement:
“Washingtonians need real support from the federal government right now to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads — not more photo ops. But instead of doing his job, Donald Trump’s incompetence is hurting working families at every turn. This latest publicity stunt at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation while cutting hundreds of millions of dollars in cleanup funding is yet another example of Trump’s total lack of concern for the safety of everyday Washingtonians. We can’t afford another four years of this indifference to the needs of regular people.”
BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S BROKEN PROMISES TO WASHINGTON
- Promise: “We’re going to rebuild America’s crumbling infrastructure. … We want a safe country. We want safety.” [Infrastructure Speech, 3/29/18]
- Reality: AP: Critics decry proposed cuts in Hanford nuclear cleanup plan (2/12/20). “Advocates for cleaning up a former nuclear weapons production site in Washington state are outraged that the Trump administration is proposing a $700 million budget cut next year.”
- Reality: AP: Trump administration proposes big cut in Hanford spending. (3/18/19). “The Trump administration is proposing big cuts to the cleanup budget for the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. The Tri-City Herald reports the administration on Monday proposed cutting Hanford’s budget by $416 million.”
- Promise: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” [CNBC Interview, 1/22/20]
- Reality: After Trump wasted time ignoring his own advisors and downplaying the coronavirus pandemic, the United States leads the world with over 5.1 million cases and more than 164,000 deaths.
- Promise: “We are marshalling the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people.” [Oval Office Address, 3/11/20]
- Reality: Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Trump and the Republican Party are attempting to overturn the Affordable Care Act — endangering health coverage for 565,000 Washingtonians and threatening protections for nearly 3 million Washingtonians with preexisting conditions.
- Reality: Trump’s testing “strategy” only aims to provide tests for 2% of Washingtonians. And even as experts warned of a coming pandemic, Trump sent record shipments of N95 masks overseas.
