(Seattle, WA) – Tiffany Smiley has made clear that she vehemently opposes President Biden’s plan to forgive a limited amount in student loans for those making less than $125,000 annually — calling such a plan “grossly unfair” and even advocating for a permanent ban on student loan forgiveness. Why, then, did she apply for loan forgiveness for her own business, through the Paycheck Protection Program?

According to new reporting, Tiffany Smiley received $2,700 in loan forgiveness from the Paycheck Protection Program via Hope Unseen, a public speaking business, where she is listed as a partner. With this stunt pulled straight from the MAGA playbook, Smiley joins the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, and other MAGA Republicans who criticize loan forgiveness programs in public while happily applying for, and accepting, loan forgiveness for themselves in private.

“Tiffany Smiley is once again trying to have it both ways: condemning hardworking, middle-class and lower-income students for getting a portion of their student loans forgiven, while at the same time accepting fully forgiven loans for herself,” said Washington state Democratic Party spokesperson Caitlin Harrington. “Her ‘rules for thee, not for me’ approach is right in line with Mitch McConnell and MAGA Republicans who are funding her campaign—and it won’t work for Washington state families.”
