A draft decision from the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked Monday. Washington State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodoski released the following statement in response Tuesday:
“Nationwide, we’ve seen the GOP push to roll back reproductive rights, as red states throughout the U.S. continue to pass extreme abortion bans. The leaked decision from the Supreme Court shows how badly we need pro-choice champions in the Senate like Patty Murray, who is working to codify Roe into law and protect every woman’s right to an abortion. Meanwhile Tiffany Smiley has said she’s ‘100% pro life’ and backs abortion bans like the one signed into law right across the state line in Idaho.
The choice is clear: Washington state can count on Patty Murray to stand up for our values and fight every day for reproductive rights, but Tiffany Smiley will stand with her extreme GOP backers like Mitch McConnell and take reproductive rights away.
And while the leaked decision is just a draft, it’s an indication of what’s to come if we don’t act. This is not only a terrible outcome for all Americans but our democracy. I am fearful for our nation, for our people, if this comes to fruition.
We can only change our course at the ballot box, and must elect people who safeguard access to abortion. Let’s get to work.”
