In an interview Saturday, Mitch McConnell said a federal abortion ban is “possible” if Republicans regain control of the Senate in November, just days after a draft decision from the U.S. Supreme Court was leaked overturning Roe v. Wade.

While Democrats in Washington state have publicly slammed the potential ruling, Republicans have been silent, including GOP candidate Tiffany Smiley. Washington State Democratic Party Chair Tina Podlodowski released the following statement in response:

“Washington state has always been proudly on the forefront of reproductive rights, even before Roe v. Wade, and if we don’t protect all of our Democratic majorities this fall, that history won’t matter. A single act of Congress could outlaw abortion nationwide no matter what Washington voters have to say about it.

“That’s why ‘100% pro-life’ Tiffany Smiley is continuing her silence. She’s trying to hide the truth from Washington voters: She is running to put Mitch McConnell back in power in the Senate and rubber stamp the MAGA Republican agenda that includes a national abortion ban.

“The only way to ensure Washington state remains pro-choice is by electing Patty Murray and pro-choice Democrats up and down the ballot at every level of office.”

Reproductive health care providers in Washington have warned if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the state will see a 385% increase in patients seeking abortion care.

Smiley’s earliest endorsers include Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), who is reportedly leading efforts to draft legislation banning abortion nationwide. Smiley also proudly accepted the endorsement of longtime anti-abortion Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), who made headlines for her outrageous anti-contraception questioning during Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearings.
